Oral history interview with Seth Bailey, 2007, December 12.

From a young Iraq War veteran comes this candid and very personal account of his service in the Echo Company, 51st Long-Range Surveillance (LRS), 165th Military Intelligence Battalion. Born in Bridgeport and raised in Athens, Tex., Seth Bailey joined the Army in 2001, and was trained in Fort Benning, Ga., at the U.S. Army Airborne School. Having served in Germany for a year, he was sent to Iraq, where, from 2003 to 2004, he worked in convoy security, reconnaissance, and long-range surveillance missions. The long neglected back injuries sustained during his initial training led to permanent disability: after finally undergoing surgery at Walter Reed Army Hospital, he was discharged from the Army. He left with the rank of E-4. In the interview, Bailey talks about his boyhood dream of joining the army, recounts his experiences as a soldier and offers his views on war and politics.
